In today’s video blog I am going to share some tips on how to utilize your wardrobe to make yourself look slimmer. Even though many of us struggle with yo-yo dieting, there are a few simple tricks you can use to look instantly slimmer on the days when the diet just isn’t working for you.
1. We are all familiar with the black trick. It’s a known fact that black makes you look slimmer…Wearing head-to-toe black will make it appear that you instantly shed 10 pounds, and who doesn’t want to look 10 pounds slimmer? You may not realize though, that you can gain the same satisfaction from wearing other shades head to toe… think grey or white. And seeing as how monochromatic looks are on trend right now, you will be killing two birds with one stone.
2. When choosing denim or trousers, you want the hem of your pants to almost hit the floor. It instantly elongates your legs, which gives an overall thinner appearance. This trick works especially well with heels because the added height lengthens the legs even more.
3. Utilize a tailor. I have talked about it several times before, but I really can’t stress enough how important it is. By adjusting a seam or adding a dart, a seamstress can help your clothes hug your body in the right places, which will make a huge difference in your appearance.

In today’s video blog I am talking about summer layering. Layering is typically reserved for the fall and winter months, but with a few simple tricks you can work it into your wardrobe all year long. When it comes to layering, there are some fundamental guidelines to follow; regardless of the season, the following strategies will help you layer like a pro.
1. Start off with a neutral basic, whether it’s a tank top or dress this base piece of clothing will set the stage for the rest of your look.
2. I like to follow up with a light layer over the top; an airy blouse with or without sleeves is great for the summer months.
3. If you’re dressing for work or a cooler evening you can follow step two with a blazer or a light sweater.
4. Accessorize. I like to layer a light scarf tied loosely around my neck with lots of jewelry and over sized sunglasses.
Layering is an excellent and cost effective way to spruce up your closet. We all go through periods where it feels like we have nothing to wear, which usually isn’t the case. Rather than buying a whole new outfit, try buying a new scarf or a new blouse that you can mix and match with items you already have laying around. It’s a good idea to invest in some basic wardrobe items that you can reinvent with layering and the addition of new accessories.

Independence Day is just around the corner and you are probably wondering how you will celebrate this year. There are always fireworks in downtown Reno, downtown Sparks and several shows around the shores of Lake Tahoe…you can even catch a display of legal personal fireworks along the beaches of the sovereign nation of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Reservation. No matter how you plan to spend your day though you’ll want to make sure you proudly display your red, white and blue in the chicest way possible.
This sweater is a bit pricey, but I still felt it was worth sharing because it is pretty awesome. It can get a little chilly at night when you are watching the fireworks; whether you’re watching from the streets or out in the water, I have a feeling this sweater would keep you nice and cozy.
If you plan on spending your day on the beach, this bikini is the perfect way to show your patriotism without looking too decked out. If red isn’t your color, you’re in luck because this suit comes in navy and white stripes too.
If you’re not into sporting the red, white and blue trend and need a more subtle way to rock our nation’s colors, try some funky nail art. This look is cute and girly without feeling overdone. For more red, white & blue nail inspiration check out Pinterest.

Personally, I have never been a huge fan of traditional boutique shopping, and by traditional I really mean expensive. Part of me has always wanted to believe that by spending $200 on a pair of designer jeans, you’re paying for quality and that the jeans will last forever, but the sad and honest truth is they won’t. They will start to fade and the material will thin just the same as any other pair. I can attest to this through first hand experience. I think I take pretty exceptional care of my clothing–gentle washing, always following proper care instructions, and utilizing my dry cleaner every chance possible–yet no matter how much I spend on an article of clothing it still slowly deteriorates over time.
With that being said, the store is fresh and modern with sleek, clean décor, the service is dialed in, and the selection is frequently updated. If you are willing to shell out for name brands I would highly recommend checking out Savvy, and even though it is pricey the store is locally owned, so spending there is going to do our economy more good than supporting chain stores.
Savvy Boutique is located at 13925 S. Virginia Street Suite 216. It is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00am to 7:00pm and Sunday from 11:00am to 6:00pm. The store also has a second location in Incline Village; it is located at 899 Tahoe Boulevard Suite 300. It’s open Thursday through Sunday from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

One of my favorite parts about summer is showing off a fresh pedicure in a pair of sandals. A nice pair of leather sandals can compliment your wardrobe in more ways than one. I like to pair my sandals with sundresses, shorts, distressed denim, swimwear, and on occasion I even wear them to the office.
I love the Mossimo strappy leather sandals from Target this season. They are very reasonably priced, but the faux leather still looks expensive. I think they would pair nicely with a summer dress or even with cuffed jeans. In the past, the sandals that I have purchased from Target generally only last through one summer before they start to fall apart; this is fine by me though because I like changing my look up each year anyway.
The gold hardware on these Aldo sandals makes a huge statement. I would keep it casual and pair these with a white cotton dress, or dress them up by pairing them with a bold pattern for a summer wedding. Because the detailing is so prominent I would recommend keeping your other accessories toned down–think a simple necklace or just a pair of earrings.
I am completely obsessed with the nautical details of this sandal. They are perfect for the beach or for date night; I think they would pair beautifully with head-to-toe black. I am a huge fan of DV by Dolce Vita–they provide a superior product at an affordable price, which is always a good thing!

In today’s video blog I am going to talk about a staple item that should be a part of every woman’s closet…the little black dress. An LBD is extremely versatile; you can dress it up or down, style it for work or a night out on the town. The options are endless.
When shopping for a little black dress you want to keep a couple of things in mind. To start you want to think about the silhouette. Are you looking for something more streamlined or something more flowy? Both looks can be styled to fulfill different purposes, the main thing you really want to pay attention to here is what makes you feel the most comfortable.
The next thing you want to pay attention to is the length and neckline. If you are shopping for a dress that you can mix into your office wardrobe, you’ll want to make sure that both the length and neckline are modest enough to be business appropriate. However, if you are just looking for something to wear around town, whether at night or during the day, you can afford to shorten the hemline a bit or go for more of a plunging neck.
After choosing the right little black dress for yourself comes the fun part, accessorizing. You can go for a look with bold jewelry and brightly colored shoes for a night out, or you can pair your dress with strappy sandals, a brightly colored scarf and some over sized sunglasses for running errands around town. If you plan on wearing your dress to work I recommend sticking to the classics with a pair of pumps, a strand of pearls and fun belt to keep the outfit from feeling too stuffy.

Sometimes you get a text in the middle of the day with the best news you’ve heard all week. Today was one of those days. I found out that in a few short months this lovely town we call home will be acquiring an H&M. Yes you heard me right. We will no longer have to travel over the hill to bask in the Swedish glory that is H&M. The fashion retailer is picking up a 22,000 square foot location in Meadowood Mall come fall 2013. The new Reno location will feature a store within store layout and include women, men, young ladies, young men, children, maternity and plus-size collections.
In January, Simon Property Groups Inc., announced a multimillion dollar renovation of Meadowood Mall in hopes of revitalizing the once thriving shopping center. So far the renovation seems to be going well with stores like Forever 21 and Vans taking up space. Prior to the revitalization, Meadowood Mall seemed to be sitting dormant. It didn’t seem that the mall would ever stand a fighting chance against The Summit or Legend’s. The renovations that have already been completed are proving this just isn’t the case, and the addition of H&M really drives the point home.
If you have never had the opportunity to visit an H&M you are in for a treat. I have been waiting for the day H&M would move into Reno with eager anticipation. The store offers quality fashion items at a very affordable price. I don’t think I have ever walked out of a store empty handed. I can only think of one downside to H&M moving into town…the adverse effects the store is sure to have on my bank account.

Summer is finally here and that means wedding season is upon us! In my latest video blog I discuss the do’s and don’ts of summer wedding attire. You want to make sure and avoid the traditional wedding faux pas. To start, you should never wear white to a wedding because you do not want to take any of the attention away from the bride. Also, traditionally you are not supposed to wear black because it is a sign of mourning. I would say that this is no longer true, especially if you are attending a night wedding in the city.
Next, there are a couple of common sense rules you should follow. You should make sure you wear something that you are comfortable in that is conducive to the wedding venue, and you should not wear something too revealing, tight or short. Finally, you should avoid wearing any form of denim. You should make sure that your attire mirrors the significance of the event you are attending!

In previous posts I have talked a lot about my favorite locally owned stores, so today I am going to share some of my favorite non-locally owned stores with you. I love supporting the Mom-and-Pop businesses of Reno whenever I get the opportunity, but every once in a while I have to fulfill my need for a bigger selection and cheaper prices. That’s where stores like Forever 21 and BCBG come into play. These stores fill my closet with trendy items and basics that don’t break the bank.
Forever 21 is known for its knock-off versions of designer items and making trends affordable. Unfortunately where the affordability is plentiful, the quality is usually lacking. I tend to shop at Forever for trendy items that I am not worried about ruining and accessories. I get the most out of the items that I buy by washing them by hand or dry cleaning them.
Whenever I have a special occasion that requires a new dress, BCBG Final Cut is always the first store I visit. The store is always widely stocked with a variety of dresses, often starting at $19. The items for sale at Final Cut are final sale only, so make sure you try everything on before leaving the store.
Gap always has and always will be one of my favorite corporations; I love each of its signature clothing entities: Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic. Here in Reno we not only have access to all three stores, but the factory versions of each of the three as well. I love Banana for work attire, Gap for denim and Old Navy for the basics like t-shirts and tank tops. While Banana Republic can be a bit on the pricey side, Gap and Old Navy are very budget friendly.

Summer is here and so are the summer trends. One trend that I am sure is here to stay is head-to-toe monochrome. This effortless combination provides instant class and is quite easy to pull together with items you already have in your closet. Today I am going to share some inspiration courtesy of a few of my favorite style bloggers, as well as provide some rules of thumb when it comes to rocking this fresh summer look.
Rachel of The Pink Peonies does monochrome in mint (another summer trend) which looks exceptional paired with neutral accessories and brunette locks. In this outfit, Rachel has paired a peplum skirt with a sweater in a very close shade of mint–the texture of the peplum and sweater compliment each other nicely. Rachel is known for her classy ensembles and often works the monochromatic trend into many of her daily looks.
Amanda of Little Miss Fearless is working the monochrome trend in head-to-toe pink. This monochromatic look works especially well because she has paired several different shades of the same color together–this method is great for adding dimension. The ‘coral’ shade of pink that Amanda is wearing looks great against her tan skin and blonde hair.
Emily of Cupcakes and Cashmere pulls off a classic take on the monochromatic trend–head-to-toe black. Head-to-toe black adds an instant glam factor that is sure to turn heads. Black is slimming and looks great on just about any frame, so if you are a little nervous to dive head first into the monochromatic trend, this is an easy transition that will have you looking fantastic.
