Summer Sandals

One of my favorite parts about summer is showing off a fresh pedicure in a pair of sandals. A nice pair of leather sandals can compliment your wardrobe in more ways than one. I like to pair my sandals with sundresses, shorts, distressed denim, swimwear, and on occasion I even wear them to the office.

Strappy Leather

Target Sandals

Target | Mossimo Strappy Sandal | $22.99

I love the Mossimo strappy leather sandals from Target this season. They are very reasonably priced, but the faux leather still looks expensive. I think they would pair nicely with a summer dress or even with cuffed jeans. In the past, the sandals that I have purchased from Target generally only last through one summer before they start to fall apart; this is fine by me though because I like changing my look up each year anyway.

Metal Detail

Aldo | Labarbara | $50.00

The gold hardware on these Aldo sandals makes a huge statement. I would keep it casual and pair these with a white cotton dress, or dress them up by pairing them with a bold pattern for a summer wedding. Because the detailing is so prominent I would recommend keeping your other accessories toned down–think a simple necklace or just a pair of earrings.

Metallic Nautical

Dolce Vita Sandal

DV by Dolce Vita | Agnyss | $69.00

I am completely obsessed with the nautical details of this sandal. They are perfect for the beach or for date night; I think they would pair beautifully with head-to-toe black. I am a huge fan of DV by Dolce Vita–they provide a superior product at an affordable price, which is always a good thing!

The Best News

H&M LogoSometimes you get a text in the middle of the day with the best news you’ve heard all week. Today was one of those days. I found out that in a few short months this lovely town we call home will be acquiring an H&M. Yes you heard me right. We will no longer have to travel over the hill to bask in the Swedish glory that is H&M. The fashion retailer is picking up a 22,000 square foot location in Meadowood Mall come fall 2013.  The new Reno location will feature a store within store layout and include women, men, young ladies, young men, children, maternity and plus-size collections.

In January, Simon Property Groups Inc., announced a multimillion dollar renovation of Meadowood Mall in hopes of revitalizing the once thriving shopping center. So far the renovation seems to be going well with stores like Forever 21 and Vans taking up space. Prior to the revitalization, Meadowood Mall seemed to be sitting dormant. It didn’t seem that the mall would ever stand a fighting chance against The Summit or Legend’s. The renovations that have already been completed are proving this just isn’t the case, and the addition of H&M really drives the point home.

If you have never had the opportunity to visit an H&M you are in for a treat. I have been waiting for the day H&M would move into Reno with eager anticipation. The store offers quality fashion items at a very affordable price. I don’t think I have ever walked out of a store empty handed. I can only think of one downside to H&M moving into town…the adverse effects the store is sure to have on my bank account.

Summer Wedding Attire

Summer is finally here and that means wedding season is upon us! In my latest video blog I discuss the do’s and don’ts of summer wedding attire. You want to make sure and avoid the traditional wedding faux pas. To start, you should never wear white to a wedding because you do not want to take any of the attention away from the bride. Also, traditionally you are not supposed to wear black because it is a sign of mourning. I would say that this is no longer true, especially if you are attending a night wedding in the city.

Next, there are a couple of common sense rules you should follow. You should make sure you wear something that you are comfortable in that is conducive to the wedding venue, and you should not wear something too revealing, tight or short. Finally, you should avoid wearing any form of denim. You should make sure that your attire mirrors the significance of the event you are attending!

My Favorite Reno Stores

In previous posts I have talked a lot about my favorite locally owned stores, so today I am going to share some of my favorite non-locally owned stores with you. I love supporting the Mom-and-Pop businesses of Reno whenever I get the opportunity, but every once in a while I have to fulfill my need for a bigger selection and cheaper prices.  That’s where stores like Forever 21 and BCBG come into play. These stores fill my closet with trendy items and basics that don’t break the bank.

Forever 21

Forever 21 Logo

Forever 21 is known for its knock-off versions of designer items and making trends affordable. Unfortunately where the affordability is plentiful, the quality is usually lacking. I tend to shop at Forever for trendy items that I am not worried about ruining and accessories. I get the most out of the items that I buy by washing them by hand or dry cleaning them.

BCBG Final Cut

BCBG Final Cut Logo

Whenever I have a special occasion that requires a new dress, BCBG Final Cut is always the first store I visit. The store is always widely stocked with a variety of dresses, often starting at $19. The items for sale at Final Cut are final sale only, so make sure you try everything on before leaving the store.

Gap, Inc.

Gap Logo

Gap always has and always will be one of my favorite corporations; I love each of its signature clothing entities: Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic. Here in Reno we not only have access to all three stores, but the factory versions of each of the three as well. I love Banana for work attire, Gap for denim and Old Navy for the basics like t-shirts and tank tops. While Banana Republic can be a bit on the pricey side, Gap and Old Navy are very budget friendly.

Trend Alert: Monochromatic

Summer is here and so are the summer trends. One trend that I am sure is here to stay is head-to-toe monochrome. This effortless combination provides instant class and is quite easy to pull together with items you already have in your closet. Today I am going to share some inspiration courtesy of a few of my favorite style bloggers, as well as provide some rules of thumb when it comes to rocking this fresh summer look.

The Pink Peonies

Rachel of The Pink Peonies does monochrome in mint (another summer trend) which looks exceptional paired with neutral accessories and brunette locks. In this outfit, Rachel has paired a peplum skirt with a sweater in a very close shade of mint–the texture of the peplum and sweater compliment each other nicely. Rachel is known for her classy ensembles and often works the monochromatic trend into many of her daily looks.

Little Miss Fearless

Amanda of Little Miss Fearless is working the monochrome trend in head-to-toe pink. This monochromatic look works especially well because she has paired several different shades of the same color together–this method is great for adding dimension. The ‘coral’ shade of pink that Amanda is wearing looks great against her tan skin and blonde hair.

Cupcakes and Cashmere

Emily of Cupcakes and Cashmere pulls off a classic take on the monochromatic trend–head-to-toe black. Head-to-toe black adds an instant glam factor that is sure to turn heads. Black is slimming and looks great on just about any frame, so if you are a little nervous to dive head first into the monochromatic trend, this is an easy transition that will have you looking fantastic.

Outfit Inspiration: Reno Rodeo

If you are a Reno local, you know that the Reno Rodeo is a summer staple. You also know that part of the fun in attending comes from getting dressed for the occasion. It’s the perfect time to pull out your boots, sundresses, Daisy Dukes and cowboy hats.

White Sundress

Summer Sundress

Quicksilver | Laurel Dress | $47.60

A crisp, white sundress is the perfect way to look country chic. This dress in particular is made out of a lightweight cotton, which is perfect for a hot summer night. Try pairing your dress with a jean jacket to keep warm after the sun goes down.

Cowboy Boots

Cowboy Boots

Tony Lama | VF3034 | $230.00

Legitimate cowboy boots like the ones pictured can be a bit pricey. The upside to the price is you get a better quality boot that will last much longer than knock-off versions. If you’re shopping locally, I recommend Shepler’s in Shopper’s Square. There is a good sized selection of women’s boots in various styles and price ranges. If authenticity isn’t a huge deal, check out Marshall’s, TJ Maxx or Target; all three stores generally carry a couple different affordable styles.

Daisy Dukes

Daisy Dukes

Rag & Bone | Mila Distressed Cutoffs | $175.00

What’s more country than a good pair of cutoffs? Pair these denim short shorts with a flannel and your boots and you’ll be set! If you don’t have a pair, try reviving a pair of jeans you haven’t worn in a while by cutting them off yourself. Get them the fray by washing them several times.

Cowboy Hat

Cowboy Hat

Dorothy Perkins | Natural Straw Cowboy Hat | $21.00

This hat will pair perfectly with any of your rodeo looks. And after the rodeo has come and gone you can continue wearing this summer-friendly straw hat to the beach.

Shop Local: Francesca’s

Francesca's LogoThis post is going to be a bit different from my other ‘Shop Local’ posts in the sense that Francesca’s isn’t necessarily locally owned…But we do have one here in town, and it is awesome. Francesca’s was initially opened in Houston, Texas in 1999. Since the store first opened its doors, the chain has spawned over 250 new locations, one of which is right here in our hometown. The store prides itself on providing a boutique experience; from the eclectic mix of girly clothing, to the huge selection of accessories, to the kitschy gifts around the register Francesca’s does not disappoint.

When you first walk into the store you immediately happen upon a table filled with color coordinated accessories. The accessories are well made and look expensive but most are under $20.00; I almost always head straight for the statement necklaces. There are bags and scarves intermixed with the also color coordinated clothing.

Francesca'sI love the clothing that Francesca’s carries. Even though the store has become a nationwide chain, it still embodies its original ideal–carrying charming hand-picked merchandise. Granted it is picked on a much larger scale these days, the items in the store still maintain a unique feel. For me, Francesca’s is a first stop if I have a special occasion, or if I am just in the mood for something girly. It’s great to know that I can find something flattering almost every time I visit.

The store does quite well for itself here in Reno, due in a large part to the fact that the items they carry are affordable. The stores success is also attributable to the friendly and helpful staff, as well as the expertly stocked and organized racks. Francesca’s Reno is located in Meadowood Mall right next to Victoria’s Secret. The store is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00am to 9:00pm and Sunday from 11:00am to 6:00pm.The next time you’re in need of a fun, feminine dress or blouse, pay Francesca’s a visit–You won’t be disappointed!

Summer Short Guide

I am not a huge fan of shorts, but when you live in a city where the summer temps reach the hundreds, they become a necessity. Finding the right pair of shorts for your body has everything to do with length. I have created this guide as a reference point for finding the right pair for your frame.

Short Shorts

Summer Short Guide

Gap | 1969 Summer Cut-Offs | $49.95

Short shorts look best on shorter women because they elongate short legs. That’s not to say they can’t look good on other statures too, they are just the most flattering on petite women. When wearing short shorts it is important to make sure that they are not too short…When it comes to appropriateness there is a very fine line.

Pop of Color

Summer Short Guide

Gap | Sunkissed Shorts | $39.95

Colored shorts are a great way to liven up your summer wardrobe. This pair in particular is a good casual length and a great summer color. Pops of neon are very on trend and look great against a fresh summer tan.

Mid-Length Shorts

Summer Short Guide

Gap | Striped Boyfriend Roll-Up Shorts | $44.95

My favorite length shorts are mid-length. They flatter all body types and when styled appropriately can even be suitable for the office. I really love this pair from the Gap. The stripes are stylish and they provide coverage in all the right places.

Boyfriend Shorts

Summer Short Guide

J Brand | Nash Boyfriend Shorts | $188.00

I have a weakness for distressed denim. I am obsessed with this pair of shorts because they are a flattering length and feature a great amount of detail. Pull this pair on with a slub tee and some flip flops for an easy and stylish look.

Outfit Inspiration: Gameday with the Reno Aces

Aces LogoOne of our nation’s favorite pastimes is heading out to the ballpark where we can catch a game, some rays and maybe even a foul ball. Here in Reno, we have the Aces and  I’d say its an absolute summer staple to make it out for at least a couple innings. But how does one go about dressing for such an event? The key is to show some home team pride without looking too kitschy. Today I am going to share three outfit options for the ladies. Whether you’re a first time fan or an Aces groupie, I’ve got you covered.

Outfit 1

Baseball Outfit

This first outfit is for the girl who wants to look stylish and trendy, but still fit in as a fan. Try creating an outfit with your team’s colors using items you already have in your closet. Its easy for us because the Aces colors are navy, red and white–a classic color combination that looks effortlessly chic no matter how you pair it.

Outfit 2

Baseball Outfit

This look is a combination of trendy and all out fanatic. Baseball caps have been very in this season, so why not pair one with a casual outfit to show some team support? I am a huge fan of the traditional, slightly faded, Aces ball cap–it’s a steal at only $21.99. Bonus…Not only does a ball cap keep you looking cute, it also shades your eyes from the afternoon sun.

Outfit 3

Baseball Outfit

The final outfit is for the diehard fan who wants the world to know that she loves her team. Lucky for us, baseball apparel has become much more appealing in recent years. Take this tank top for example, the cut and print are both trendy. I’d pair this tank (another steal at only $20.00) with some jeans or even a maxi skirt on a warm summer night. This look is obviously styled with a mitt because no true fan would ever enter the park without one!

Get out there and see a game this summer…Just make sure you don’t forget the SPF!

Shop Local: Sippees

SippeesIf you have been reading my blog for any increment of time, you know that I have a thing for second-hand stores. I am excited to let you know that just a few days ago, another one popped up in Midtown. Its called Sippees and it was opened by Jessica Schneider, owner of Junkee Clothing Exchange. Unlike any of the other stores I have mentioned though, Sippees is geared towards the kiddos.

Sippees has a little bit of everything, and stepping through the front door feels more like hopping on a ride at Disneyland than it does entering a store. It contains more than enough fun activities to keep the kids busy while you sort through the racks. The store, which carries new and used children’s clothing, features a giant seal named Sippee, a tutu warehouse, a life-size tug boat, and a sail boat filled with salt water taffy. By the looks of the place, I’d imagine that parents have a hard time getting their kids to leave.

SippeesSimilarly to Junkee Clothing Exchange, Sippees buys, sells and trades used children’s clothing in addition to selling all the goodies and new stuff. I have a feeling that Sippees will do quite well for itself. It’s not like its the only re-sale children’s clothing store, but it is the only re-sale children’s clothing store of its kind. If you don’t have any kids in your life, the store is still worth checking out…its that awesome. If you do have kids though, don’t wait. Sippees will surely become one of your go-to stores.

Sippees is located at 955 S. Virginia Street and is open 7 days a week from 10:00am to 6:00pm. Check it out and let me know what you think!
